The month of May marks a transition time in Central Appalachia's forests as the canopy's vibrant green cloak closes above the forest floor, and the spring ephemerals go dormant and fade away. The forest now belongs to the ferns, fungi, mosses, and lichens, which collectively drive nature's great recycling engine. The next great spectacle, just around the corner, is the mountain laurel bloom, with a few plants already busting out their colors.

Photos from two different weekend hikes around the Cheat River Canyon (which, along with Dolly Sods and the New River Gorge, has one of the best laurel blooms in Central Appalachia).

since i did traditional art last year and since i've started studying again and so have less free time, this year i'm doing pale gamkar week a little differently than my usual art (in the hopes it'll save me some time ; -- ;) i'm aiming for a little more cartoony and a whole lot sillier! i didn't have time to draw yesterday so today i'm posting both day 1 and day 2 of @pale-gamkar-week 2024 prompts: laughter and bath!

i might do full colours for these at some point but this is as good as it gets for now lol

It really feels like Draxum should have planned better…

How successful is he in getting the giant mutant toddler turtles to eat what they are supposed to eat? Toddlers and notoriously finicky and it’s not like there is a high chair in existence big enough to fit Raph.

Also, when does he realise they have human level intelligence rather than animal? What is it that tips him off?

Honestly, mutating the turtles probably worked way better than Draxum was expecting it to, which is why he didn't plan for this specific scenario. For example, if you look at the size of the mutation pods:

They're pretty small. Those pods are simply not big enough to hold person-sized mutants. So either the turtles were originally going to go from those pods to larger ones during the mutation process (which would imply he wanted mutants capable of fighting from the get-go), or Draxum intended for them to stay small (which would imply he intended to raise them as warriors). Whatever his original plan was, this mutation didn't follow it, and could, theoretically, therefore be considered a failure.

As far as feeding the turtles goes, it's probably helped out by the fact that at this point they're still eating more like turtles than actual toddlers. For the most part, he's been able to feed them a variety of vegetables and meats, with different ratios for different turtles. However, they will share or swap food with each other, so occasionally he has to separate them so they actually get all the nutrients they need.

Also, they vocalize when they exchange food.

This is one of the things that gives Draxum hope that they are indeed sentient, because they appear to have the capacity to use language, or at least communicate with sounds. As for what exactly tips him off, I'm hoping to make a comic on that soon.

I feel terrible about this but while looking for an elastic band on my husband's desk I found the snail who was MIA-presumed dead-presumed ?cannibalised around two or three months ago.

He was retracted well, good membrane, but didn't seem dead so we worked on him and he's a little worse for wear, but generally okay.

just Sketches of really my only 2 OC kaiju, Xenoprobe and Megasakuui. the former is basically a spacegodzilla replacement and is a bio-metallic robot that's able to process DNA to adapt to it's environment. the latter is a giant sea cucumber who basically does nothing but walk out of the ocean looking for people's garbage.

these are two juvenile emperor shrimp competing over a sea cucumber, a species that tends to be the subject of a commensal* relationship with these little guys! emperor shrimp will choose a host to ride on the backs of, gaining protection, food, and a free ride! but sometimes a host may be too popular for their own good and attract several emperors, leading to fights like these.

and no, they don't know how to share. eternal greed forever

*commensal, meaning one party benefits and the other remains unaffected. HOWEVER, newer studies suggest it could be more mutualistic than we portray it to be, since it apparently seems like emperor shrimp also sometimes eat parasites off of their hosts.
